Packing Tips For Storage & Shipping!

Shipping is different from moving. For moving, the box is not degraded as much during transport. At most, a box may be stacked once or twice, typically transported directly, and unpacked relatively quickly. Shipping is much more harsh: A shipper will place your items on a truck, stacked with other items, then load and unload many times at shipping facilities along the route. This will cause abrasion to the cardboard, jostling of the items inside, tipping and possible falls, and other shocks to the packages. These stresses will impact your box along the seams and taping — especially if the box is poorly packed, contains air pockets and has no filling to cushion the shocks. The box will experience multiple shocks of this kind until it reaches the Ship2Storage warehouse. Then the process will be repeated to return the box to you.

Ship2Storage does not assume responsibility nor insure items that arrive damaged in transport, and we have created this page to help you pack your items properly. Boxes that arrive at our warehouse showing damage must be packaged appropriately in order for shippers to accept them for the trip back to you. This is a requirement of all shippers, and reboxing fees may range from $15 - $22 or more, depending on the damage and the degree of handling required to repack the boxes. The images below show examples of boxes and damage caused by poor packing.

Please use double-walled, reinforced boxes capable of withstanding the stresses shipping. In our experience, smaller boxes packed with their appropriate weight with reinforced seams can greatly help prevent transport stress and damage. Since WEIGHT is by far the biggest component of shipping, the costs should be roughly equal to packing in larger boxes. Smaller boxes will also be easier for you to handle. Be sure to fill all empty space with filler materials such as air pillows, bubble sheets, etc. Use high strength, 3 in. wide or greater packing tape.DO NOT use thin-walled moving boxes from large hardware stores or other sources — especially large ones! DO NOT pack heavy items in weak boxes, especially large ones. Doing so could cause shippers to reject your packages, re-boxing / handling fees and/or loss of your items during transport.

Example: Crumpled newspaper, loose-fill paper/styrofoam peanuts, or air cushioning material such as bubble sheets or air "pillows" were not used to fill empty spaces. A weak cardboard moving box was used, instead of a sturdy shipping box. This weak box, poor packing, and heavy weight caused the box to cave, and split. Shippers will reject this box when we attempt to ship the box back to the owner, and reboxing handling fees will result.

Estimated cost: $15.00 - $16.00

Example: Weak cardboard moving box was used, instead of a sturdy shipping box. Shipping boxes have thick cardboard with one or two or more layers of reinforcement. Since boxes can be stacked during transport, this weak box, poor packing, and heavy weight caused the box to cave, and split. Even the seam reinforcement with tape did not help to prevent movement of goods inside the box. Shippers will reject this box also when we attempt to ship the box back to the owner, and re-boxing handling fees will result.

Estimated cost: $15.00 - $22.00

Example: Narrow shipping tape was used, rather than 3" wide pressure-sensitive shipping tape. For heavy boxes (> 30 lbs), heavy paper tape should be used. Here the weak tape was not enough to seal the box. An inferior quality, weak moving box ‐ instead of a stronger, reinforced shipping box ‐ also worsened the problem. Shippers will reject this box also when we attempt to ship the box back to the owner, and re-boxing handling fees will result.

Estimated cost: $15.00 - $22.00
